We want everyone to be able to use this website and to get mortgage advice from us, whatever their circumstances. This page explains where we have got to, what we know is still imperfect, and how to reach a human if the website is getting in your way.
What we aim for
We work to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. That is the recognised standard for making websites usable by people who are blind or partially sighted, who navigate by keyboard rather than a mouse, who use speech recognition or a screen reader, or who find dense and low-contrast text hard to read.
We do not claim the site meets every part of that standard today. The list below is what we currently know about.
What we have done
- Every form field has a label, so a screen reader announces what it is asking for.
- Everything can be operated by keyboard alone, including the menu, the mortgage comparison table and its sorting.
- Errors on a form are announced rather than only shown, and focus moves to the message so you know it happened.
- Every page has a unique title and a "skip to main content" link.
- The scrolling announcement bar at the top can be paused, and stays paused if your device is set to reduce motion.
- Text can be enlarged, including pinch-zoom on a phone, without anything breaking.
Known issues
- The mortgage comparison results are laid out as a grid rather than a proper data table, so a screen reader does not announce the column headings alongside each figure. If you would like the results read out or sent to you in another format, call or email us and we will do it.
- Some smaller supporting text sits below the size we would like. We are working through it.
- Our form fields show their name as placeholder text, which disappears once you start typing. Screen readers are unaffected, but it is not ideal and we intend to change it.
Getting help another way
You never have to use this website to deal with us. Every enquiry the site handles can be done by phone or email instead, and it costs you nothing extra. If any part of a mortgage application is difficult for you, tell us and we will work around it. That includes reading documents to you, taking details over the phone, allowing more time, or dealing with someone you nominate to act for you.
